BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Faith Academy bounced back from a loss to National University in the 30th Metro Manila Basketball League with a thorough 64-43 trouncing of overmatched UNO High School last Saturday at the San Beda College Gym.

With Neil De Cleene and Mark Lovatt shutting down the lane on the defensive end, point guard Nick Dalafu presided over the FA Vanguards’ first quarter onslaught with 11 points to take a 22-9 lead. Star swingman TJ Hardeman, who will be going to college in the United States after this season, then picked up the scoring chores from Dalafu by scoring 15 of his 17 points after the first quarter to complete the rout.

In a battle between the Xavier School Team C and Faith Academy Team B, the Stallions, behind the exploits of Alrich Lam broke open a close first half for a 64-36 mauling. The Vanguards trailed early on but closed the gap 31-27 behind center Toby Lim who finished with 12 points. But Xavier countered with a stifling full court press that sucked the life out of Faith Academy who only scored nine points in the second half of play.

Rich Golden Montessori School bucked a late rally by Trinity University of Asia to take a 70-64 decision. Guard Rodel Bilar topscored for RGMS with 17 points.

In the girls’ division, Faith Academy had no answer for the inside-outside play of UNO High School to fall 48-34. The Velez sisters, Alexis and Yvette combined for 20 points to make short work of an overmatched Faith squad that featured Jackie Long, the youngest sibling of former Ateneo Blue Eagles’ star, Kirk Long.

Long scored tallied five points, two assists, and five rebounds to back up Victoria Choi who led her team with 11 points.

UNO forced the ball out of primary ballhander Sonya Hagberg to her teammates who had a difficult time bringing down the ball more so executing. Pint-sized point guard Grace Jung tried her best to assist Hagberg but UNO was the deeper and more talented squad.

Ateneo de Manila figured in a pair of squeakers as the Blue Eaglets slipped past San Sebastian College 80-79 behind Matthew Nieto’s 19 points and Thirdy Ravena’s 22 points in a second match against Malayan Institute of Technology, 65-64.

Defending NCAA Juniors champion San Beda kept its unbeaten streak going with a 99-65 laugher over Chiang Kai Shek College. Rev Diputado and Arvin Tolentino top scored for San Beda respectively with 16 and 14 points.
