BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

What a debut by RGIII!

I selected the elite and top rookie quarterbacks in the NFL with their Week 1 stats. Who do you think stands out? RGIII looks good, huh? You think he'll lead Washington to a Super Bowl title the way Joe Theismann (Super Bowl XVII), Doug Williams (Super Bowl XXII), and Mark Rypien (Super Bowl XXVI) did? He was cool, calm, and composed in his debut against a very good New Orleans team in their home field. And RGIII was just named Player of the Week! He's the very first rookie QB to win that award. Week Two should be very interesting.

Tony Romo (Dallas) 22-29, 307 yards, 3 TDs
Eli Manning (New York Giants) 21-32, 213 yards, 1 TD
Andrew Luck (Indianapolis) 23-45, 309 yards, 1 TD
Michael Vick (Philadelphia) 29-56, 317 yards, 2 TDs
Tom Brady (New England) 23-31, 236 yards, 2 TDs
Robert Griffin III (Washington) 19-26, 320 yards, 2 TDs
Drew Brees (New Orleans) 24-52, 339 yards, 3 TDs
Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) 19-27, 266 yards, 3 TDs
Alex Smith (San Francisco) 20-26, 211 yards, 2 TDs
Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay) 30-44, 303 yards, 2 TDs
Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh) 22-40, 245 yards, 2 TDs
Peyton Manning (Denver) 19-26, 253 yards, 2 TDs
Joe Flacco (Baltimore) 21-29, 299 yards, 2 TDs
