BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

First death anniversary of mom forces Younghusbands to miss Azkals’ Laos match

James and Phil Younghusband will miss the Philippine Men’s Football National Team’s friendly match with Laos on September 10 as they flew back to Manila on the eve of the first death anniversary of their late mother, Susan.

Susan Younghusband, who succumbed to a massive heart attack, was 49 years of age.

Said James, “Unfortunately, we will miss the game against Laos but this is an important day for our family and we have spoken with management and they understand.

“We remain fully committed to the national team and look forward to rejoining them in other preparations for the Suzuki Cup late this year,” added Phil.

National head coach Hans Michael Weiss confirmed the Younghusbands’ absence for the upcoming match with a text message: “The brothers and myself have had many meetings and this was agreed upon that they would miss the Laos game. We made it clear with each other a while ago and there is no problem.”

Phil scored the Philippines’ second goal in its 2-0 win over longtime tormentor Singapore.

The match against Laos is the final leg of the Azkals’ three-nation tour as part of its tune up matches for the Suzuki Cup in Thailand this November.
