BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Chelsea HK coach Dave Stewart to grace Chelsea Soccer School Philippines Opening

The anticipation of the opening of The Chelsea FC Soccer School in Philippines is reaching a fever pitch. The school will kick off with a special Summer Camp that will be operated under a special arrangement between Chelsea FC and The Younghusband Football Academy.

This is indeed a special and unique event with the Younghusband Football Academy as its directors and principal coaches, brothers James and Phil Younghusband were once Chelsea Youth Academy standouts.

Helping out in the first few sessions will be Dave Stewart, Football Program Development Manager of the Chelsea FC Soccer School in Hong Kong. Stewart has been teaching football from the grassroots to elite level for the past 10 years in 20 different countries. He holds an English FA Level 2 Coaching Certificate and a UEFA Level 3 Coaching Certificate.

Stewart will be joining the Younghusband Brothers when they kick off the Chelsea FC Soccer School with a press conference on Monday, April 16, 2012 at the GroupM offices at the 23rd Floor, Picadilly Star building at the Fort.

“For me, teaching kids is a different satisfaction to playing football but it’s on the same level. Just a different satisfaction,” said Phil of the brothers’ foray into coaching.

“Seeing these kids with joy in their faces reminds us of ourselves when we were younger. For us to play a part in their development makes us happy. Because one thing we noticed at the young level -- maybe under the age of 12 -- kids are very similar in the abilities of those youngsters in England and Europe. The problem is when they move up to the high school and college level where the lack of opportunities and the lack of quality games hinders their development of players. For us to work with Chelsea in these kids’ development makes us excited.”

Added James, who is team captain for the Loyola Meralco Sparks, “During our younger years, Phil was playing as a defender and I was playing as a striker. That’s why it is important to help them develop and discover their talents.”

“Plans are being made for the official launch of the Chelsea FC Soccer School Philippines and we will be releasing more details very soon. Both Phil and I are excited about this project but first thing first, let’s enjoy this upcoming Summer Camp together!”

The Chelsea FC Soccer School summer camp powered by The Younghusband Football Academy and will have a limited number of slots for intermediate and advanced football training that will also be overseen by some of the club’s coaches. The age groups will be divided as follows Under-8, U-10, U-12, and U-16 for boys and girls.

The summer camp will be held at the Evia Football Field in Las PiƱas on April 17, 19, 24, 26 as well as on May 3, 8, and10. The culminating activity and the Official Launch of the Chelsea Soccer School, will be held on May 15 at the SM Mall of Asia.
