BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Stallion routs Queen City 8-nil

Stallion FC reached for the moon and came up with the stars. Overcoming the unavailability of their head coach, the suspension of their top striker, and the pressure of needing a win and a bunch of goals, the Iloilo-based eleven put the big hurt on Cebu Queen City United FC with a telling 8-0 win at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium last Saturday.

After last weekend’s 2-nil loss to Pachanga, Stallion worked their Korean connection to perfection as they picked apart the Cebuano team with seamless passing and clinical finishing.

With Korean Pee Hyung Eun taking over the coaching chores for the second straight match because of the absence of head coach Ernie Nierras who was in Laos for the Asean Football Federation Women’s Championship, Stallion ran a compact 442 formation that choked the life out of the ground passing game of Cebu Queen City.

Then they began raiding their opponent from the wings.

Air Force strafes Navy for six goals for 2nd win

Philippine Air Force FC launched a surgical strike on Philippine Navy FC and the Airmen came away with a 6-2 win in UFL Cup action at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium yesterday.

In the first inter-service clash of the UFL Cup, the Airmen, runners up to Global FC in the inaugural cup competition of last season, took control of the match towards the end of the first half when they swung their attack to the right wing where Navy’s defense was less compact.

Navy threw four defenders – Stephen Burda, Rolly Perez, PJ Fadrigalan, and Loreto Kalalang – at the right wing where they repeatedly forced striker Ian Araneta and midfielder Chieffy Caligdong to cough up the ball with their 1-2 touch passing. Swinging over to the right, midfielder Jeruzel Tonog found Araneta on a quick counter. The veteran national player turned and fired a shot past Navy keeper Martin Alcantara.

Now finding the gap in Navy’s defensive alignment, Air Force repeated the right wing attack and Tonog sent another cross this time to Caligdong whose cracking volley beat Alcantara.
