BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Some pics from the weekend in Kuwait and Manila

With Anton del Rosario before the match.

Never thought I'd see this. A predominantly Filipino crowd that occupied 65% of the stadium. They got going with constant cheering and clapping. Thanks to the Philippine Embassy for helping out with them.

Thanks, Gerry Punsalan. I'm sure Yannick and Chaddy would say the same. Hey, Jason Sabio. You should have gone with us. When ya'll go to Kuwait, drop by the Athlete's Foot store in the Marina Mall. Gerry, the store manager, will take care of you there. Thanks to Gerry and the entire Filipino staff there.

I counted at least six Philippine flags that were being waved around the stadium. There were streamers and banners everywhere. Such a fantastic sight. The grandstand area behind the media tribune was SRO. I pity the people there who were packed like sardines. The organizers must have made a killing at the tills.

The Kuwaitis had their own cheering squad that was organized and just fantastic. They never stopped during the game and they give credence to the line, "Outnumbered but never outgunned."

At the sucky NAIA with Jason Sabio, Simon Greatwich, Ojay Porteria, and Dan Palami upon our arrival Sunday late night. Tired but ready. Hey, guys. You don't think it's the chewing gum, right? And the black version of the FC Barcelona jersey is the only one I'd wear with "Qatar Foundation" in front. The regular version sucks.
