BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Different strokes for John Smoltz

For the last couple of months, I have been following the new career of former Atlanta Braves pitching great John Smoltz in the PGA Tour. He recently competed in the South Georgia Classic where he missed the cut by 27 strokes. Is he out of his league? Nope. This is his first national event and although forgettable, he can only get better.

For the longest time, Smoltz was a starting pitcher but after a while, he shifted to closer. If I remember correctly, in one of his first games as a closer, he gave up eight runs in 2-plus innings. I think in the post-game interview, he said that he had not given up that many runs as a starter.

And that was a low point. He is the only MLB pitcher with 213 wins and 154 saves. So maybe on the golf course, who knows how far he could move up?

  1. next to greg maddux , smoltz was my favorite pitcher. together with glavine, the braves has the most feared starting rotation during the 90's.
smoltz altered his throwing angle after an injury, he started for a while but then was assigned as a closer after a few games.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR NEW PROFESSION JOHN..and enjoy!!
