BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Friday with the NBA Asia guys and LA Laker legend AC Green

Interviewed Los Angeles Laker legend AC Green. We had quite a chat that will be the subject of my column for Monday. Very friendly, amiable and despite battling jetlag and not having slept a wink, his energy level was contagious.

With NBA Asia's Jama Mahlalela. We were discussing our event for this coming Monday where Gatorade and the NBA will stage a Shooting Stars contest involving Gatorade Brand Ambassadors (Mike Silungan, Kirk Long, Nate Matute, Ice Ciriacruz, Borgie Hermida, LA Tenorio, Alex Nuyles, Nico Elorde, Tata Marata, Aldrech Ramos, Joseph Terso, and maybe Keifer Ravena), selected members of the PBA and College Hoops Press Corps, Jr. NBA players, and fans. That should be fun and maybe a yearly event that we'd like to do. And oh, will be engaging AC Green in a free throw shooting contest. Hahaha. Man, I should practice them free throws. What's his free throw shooting percentage anyways?

Coach Tim Cone couldn't be at the dinner at the Marriott (for partners) but he did deliver a message via video. Congratulations on the Game 1 win over the tough tough Air21 Express. Sonny Thoss is indeed the Boss! About the dinner, there was a raffle where the Marriott was giving away an overnight stay at the hotel all the way to lunch the following day with the use of all their facilities. My business card got picked out as the winner but right before the raffle, I stepped out to go to the john. The NBA's Carlo Singson said, "Sorry, Rick. But we gotta raffle the prize again!" I wasn't aware of it until Ed Winkle told me about it. Arrrghhh!

Photo op with the NBA Asia officials (who are always a swell bunch of folks to work with) and the official partners of the NBA here in the Philippines. Am to the right of Ed Winkle. Watch out for my column this Monday in the Business Mirror. It's on AC Green!
