BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

With the Azkals post-Panaad 2006

THE WAY WE WERE: I first covered the Philippine National Men's Football Team in 2006 in Panaad, Bacolod. This photo was taken at the Mizuno office in Magallanes, Makati. This is where I first became friends with these guys. Glorious glory days, brothers. From left to right: Phil Younghusband, Chris Greatwich, Matthew Hartmann, me, Phil Greatwich, James Younghusband, Henry Brauner, and Louie Casas. There are a bunch of others who are not in the picture. Honestly, I can't remember why they were not all in the pic. Hahaha. I still have that football signed by the entire team. I still have that red jersey that they wore from back then. Chris used to call me "Mr. Solar" back then. Hahaha. That's because I was still with Solar Sports then and we covered the Azkals for two tournaments. And I began to write about them at the same time. I still have the DVDs of their matches then. I managed to save them when Typhoon Ondoy wreaked havoc on my apartment.
