BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Lehnert advances to ICTSI-ITF semifinals

Score one for Philippine women's tennis. Fil-German Katharina Lehnert upset top seed Nungnadda Wannasuk of Thailand, 6-4, 6-4, last November 4, 2010 to enter the semifinal round of the ICTSI-ITF Women’s division at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center. 

Lehnert, a 16-year old from Hannover, Germany and whose mother, Imelda Lungsod, calls La Union, Pangasinan home, advanced to play Thai Luksika Kumkhum for the right to go to the finals. The Thai beat No. 4 seed Paengthan Pliphuech, 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-2.

Lehnert got into sports by playing football but she eventually gravitated to tennis where she finds herself ranked 102 in the women's tour. She will be also be competing in the PLDT-Smart/ITF Women’s Circuit 2, the Phinma Juniors Championship and the Philippine Columbian Association Open.

UPDATE: Katharina Lehnert lost to Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand 6-4, 6-2 in the semis today at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum Tennis Center.
