San Beda’s Amer and Daniel named NCAA Juniors and Seniors MVPs

San Beda College scored a sweep of the Most Valuable Player awards in the juniors and seniors divisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Season 86.

In the Juniors Division, Baser Amer was adjudged the MVP as he compiled 15.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 11.7 assists, and 2.4 steals as he led the Red Cubs to a 14-2 record.

Rounding out the Juniors Mythical Five Selection are San Sebastian’s Gino Jumao-as, Joshua Alolino of the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Junior Altas, Cris dela Paz of Jose Rizal University, and Rey Nambatac of Letran College.

Nambatac was also named Rookie of the Year while Emilio Aguinaldo College’s Vince Menguito was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Year. The Junior Altas’ Flash Sadiwa was picked to the Most Improved Player.

Over at the Seniors Division, San Beda continued to stamp its class on NCAA basketball when sophomore center Sudan Daniel was declared the MVP. The California native averaged 10.9 points, 11.4 rebounds (second), and 4.4 blocks (first) per game as he led the Red Lions to a 16-0 sweep of the elimination round. Along the way, he picked up two triple doubles with both coming against the Perpetual Help Altas.

Daniel, who was also a former Los Angeles Lakers ballboy, was named to the Mythical Five Selection alongside teammates Borgie Hermida and Garvo Lanete. San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva, who battled Daniel neck and neck for the MVP Award but was brought down by the Stags’ three loses (two to San Beda and one to Arellano University), was also chosen to the Mythical Five. Arellano University’s Andrian Celada who came on strong for the Chiefs in the second round was named to the best five.

Daniel was the second Red Lions to win the best player award in the last five years. Sam Ekwe, San Beda’s Nigerian center who led the school to a three-peat from 2006-08, was league MVP in 2006 and 2008. Daniel picked up a third award when he was also named the Best Defensive Player.

The College of Saint Benilde’s Carlo Lastimosa was chosen as the Rookie of the Year.
