BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

This ain't no Zombieland, it's Soccer Aid

Soccer Aid is a UNICEF charity event where two teams -- England and The Rest of the World -- that are comprised of retired football stars and celebrities play a football match. In this year's staging of the event, the two teams finished regulation at 2-2 with England's goals coming from former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham and the Rest of the World's scores coming from former LFC defender Sami Hyypia and Welsh professional boxer Joe Calzaghe (imagine that). As the match went into penalty kicks, actor Woody Harrelson, scored the winning blast for the Rest of the World team (7-6 in the PK shootout).

Some of Harrelson's celeb teammates included Michael Sheen (The Damned United) and Mike Myers (Austin Powers). The football legends who played for the Rest of the World squad included Zinedine Zidane, Henrik Larsson, Luis Figo, and Jens Lehmann.

For England, they had boxer Ricky Hatton (who scored a goal in Old Trafford but hey, he is a Manchester City fan) and Damian Lewis (of Band of Brothers and Life fame)! What a thoroughly enjoyable match!

The match was held at Old Trafford. The photo below was taken from Yahoo.
