BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Some great reading before kick off in the wee hours of Saturday

The latest issue of Sports Illustrated is now available. Landon Donovan, baby.
If you notice the background how the Sports Illustrated logo is covered by the three footballers; about 20 years ago such a thing was unthinkable. The reason being (in the US), magazines were placed on a newsstand rack and you needed to see the name of the mag and logo to stand out. The rise of the modern specialty shop from Barnes & Noble to Borders eliminated that. Even if you go to HMV or even Kinokuniya, the mags are displayed prominently so you can see the cover in its full glory. One of the first to break that standard was Marvel Comics when they began to blow up the logos of their titles. It was a gamble but it worked. Hope that bit of trivia helps.
