BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Three Coaches

Three coaches -- FEU's Glenn Capacio, Adamson U's Leo Austria, and UE's Lawrence Chongson compare notes, observations, and game gossip during today's Fil Oil games. I was inside the press room finishing my article on Rajko Toroman who I interviewed earlier today. I went out only to see Chongson's Red Warriors were down by almost 20 points to the CSB Blazers. I was gabbing with Manila Bulletin's Jonas Terrado who was wondering what was wrong with UE. I said that those guys were like diesel engines and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't come back. And they did and the beat the Blazers. What an awesome comeback. Chongson was his usual funny and quotable self during the post-game interview. When the other writers were done, I had a brief chat with him about his team. He thinks that the James Martinez-Paul Lee combo will be even deadlier than the previous tandem of Rudy Lingganay-Paul Lee. "They don't need the ball to be effective. They can also create for one another and when push comes to shove, they can take those clutch shots." Fair warning served on the rest of the UAAP. There's a renewed commitment from his team on the defensive end.
