BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Thanks, Vince!

I like this picture of Vince Burke taking a shot against UP's Woody Co (Yes, mom. It's a foul). His face is obscured by his arm as he launches a jumper. It says a lot about his time in Ateneo. Low key. Quiet. And I'd say, tough.

When some Ateneo fans tell me that they think that Vince Burke should be brought down to Team B, I always disagree. Having watched him for a little over two years now, I always liked his willingness to take the shot and to mix it up inside. In his very first Ateneo-La Salle game, he even hit two huge shots that in my book, make him a player to be counted on during pressure situations. Let's face it. Did we expect anything out of Ford Arao or Rabeh Al-Hussaini in their early years? Ditto with Jai Reyes. Many thought that they were busts. The cool thing about it is they proved everyone wrong. But I guess we'll never know now with Vince, right? And I was hoping you'd play for the Ateneo Men's Volleyball Team. That would have been a blast!

I just want to say, "Thanks, Vince! Thanks too for your time in blue and white." I guess it didn't work out but good luck when you go back home to the States.

Thanks for the pic, Raddy!
