BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Monday Morning Zingers

Peter Crouch -- a pitchman for Pringles? Man, that is so cool.

I told you Tim Donaghy is innocent! Shocking but true. The Dallas Mavericks sport a 1-16 record against the San Antonio Spurs in the playoffs when Danny Crawford officiates.

When Landon Donovan was asked about his Los Angeles Galaxy teammate David Beckham being in a cast, said Captain America: “It’s probably an Armani cast.”

Barack Obama stumping for LeBron James to play for the Bulls? Hope he does better than making a case for Chicago to be the site of an upcoming Olympic Games. But they have to get a really good coach. For so long they've been saddled with mediocre and unproven coaches. Like I've said, get someone who has won. Maybe not as a coach but as an NBA player. Lately, they've interviewed Elston Turner, a former Bull who played alongside Michael Jordan for two years 1986-88 and the Chicago Rockers in the CBA. He has been an assistant coach for Rick Adelman in the Portland Trailblazers, Sacramento Kings, and the Houston Rockets. His NBA bio says that as a coach, he is in charge of his teams' gameplans. I guess they're pretty good coz those teams he's been on have been winning (well, except for the big one).

So it's the Chicago Blackhawks versus the Philadelphia Flyers for the Stanley Cup? Yes, I know that Philly has a game to play. But it isn't over 'til it's over. The Boston Celtics know that even with a 3-0 lead. In the same TD Banknorth Garden, the Bruins blew a 3-0 lead to the Flyers.

Bawi na lang, Smart Gilas. They lost their opening game to Qatar in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. We will no longer be catching teams by surprise. In last year's competition and in Dubai, a lot of the competition got a long and hard look at the nationals. They are ready for us. Size-wise we're still at a disadvantage but here's hoping that heart, desire, and focus get us farther in the competition. Good luck, team!
