BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Friday Stuff

I know it's the NU Bulldogs' first game in Fil Oil but even after they've been reinforced with two Africans and they went to Hoosierland for training they still got their asses kicked 74-56. And Manny Dandan was replaced as he was blamed for the repeated blowouts?

That's like after Joe Lipa was fired after his UP Fighting Maroons went 0-14. The year after, the UPIS Junior Maroons went 0-14 and last season they had what record? Another 0-14 record. And is the coach still around? Tell me there's no politics in basketball. Please.

Kelly Williams to Smart Gilas. Yep, that was a long time coming. Almost from the very start, Williams was on Rajko Toroman's wish list (he also named two other PBA players). But that's it, I figure. The team's almost all set. But I wonder what all this wheeling and dealing is doing to the minds of some of the team's players? I know this program is a work in progress. Unfortunately, some of the problems could have been avoided. I'm going to add these lyrics from one of my fave bands here: And they all want to love the cause. 'Cause they all need to be the cause. They all want to fuck the cause.

Bet the New York Yankees regret passing on Roy Halladay. As I wrote before, they had a chance to get Curt Schilling who was looking forward to go to New York but they allowed the Bosox to take him. Will history repeat itself with Halladay? Looks like getting Javy Vazquez was a mistake, huh? One more loss and let's go get a replacement.

Marseille are once more French Ligue 1 champions unseating luckless Bordeaux. OM are back after a 19-year absence and they clinched the title with two games to spare. Lille and AJ Auxerre, surprise contenders will likely take anywhere from second to fourth place depending on the final outcomes of their games. The fallout from Bordeaux's failure to repeat? Marouane Chamakh, the Frenchman who instead plays for his parents' country of Morocco, is now headed for Arsenal. That ends a great partnership with midfielder Youann Gourcuff for the former French champs. Does Chamakh's recruitment entice Cesc Fabregas to stay?
