BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Another big win. Another series in the bag. Yankees flatten Red Sox 14-3.

Guess the New York Yankees finally have Boston off their back. After the Red Sox broke through in 2004, they've pretty much handled New York. But after the Empire State team's stirring comeback against them last season looks like the shoe is on the other foot again. Mark Teixeira hit three home runs against the Red Sox becoming the first Yankee to do that against their rivals since Lou Gehrig way back in 1927. Tex led the hit parade alongside another surprise package in backup catcher Francisco Cervelli. Both had five RBIs as New York won huge 14-3 for their sixth straight victory. That's their ninth series win in 10 tries this year.

There was a rain delay for over an hour and a half that knocked out CC Sabathia from the game but didn't cool down NY's hot bats. They finished off with 17 hits.

The Elias Sports Bureau says that on the two other occasions the Yanks have done that -- 14 of their 15 in 1928 and 11 of 12 in 1939, they won the World Series. The 1928 team beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 and the '39 Yanks swept the Cincinnati Reds 4-0.

The '28 Bombers had rightfielder Babe Ruth, first baseman Lou Gehrig, catcher Bill Dickey, pitcher Waite Hoyt, short stop Tony Lazzeri, and centerfielder Earle Combs -- all Hall of Famers.

The '39 Yanks saw Bill Dickey bridge that team alongside future Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio, aka the Yankee Clipper as well as pitchers Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing.

On this Yankees team, possible Hall of Famers include: Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, and Alex Rodriguez. Other still have a long ways to go. Jorge Posada intrigues me. Hope he makes it to Cooperstown as well.

Here are a couple of nice baseball articles from the New York Times, my favorite newspaper:
