With the late Willie Caballes (left of photo above) and other scribes Julius Manicad of the Tribune, June Navarro of the Inquirer, and the Star's Joey Villar and Jun Mendoza. Also included in the pic are PSC's Harry Angping and SBP President MVP. Kuya Willie was a sports writer and assistant sports editor of the Manila Bulletin.
Last year, I shared a room with Kuya Willie while covering Smart Gilas Pilipinas at the FIBA Champions Challenge Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. The conventional didn't apply to him. "Wag kang matakot. Gawin mo yung kailangan mong gawin," he said as he puffed on a cigarette in a non-smoking room. "Sulat ka lang ng sulat at taninga nilang lahat. 'Yan ang magaling na sportswriter." Then he went down to play poker with the other guys as I got some shut eye. He passed away last Sunday in Naic, Cavite. Rest in peace, Kuya Will. But I hear they got a great bowling tournament up in the sky.
