BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Going to South Africa?

Fly Cathay via HK or Singapore Airlines via Singapore. You also might be able to get a better fare though via Malaysian or Emirates.

Hotels will be a bit of a problem as I hear they are all booked up.

You can change money at the airport but the rate will be crap.

Otherwise change dollars through a friend who can buy dollars at the market mid-point rate. If you don’t have a friend… aww, that’s too bad.

Avoid public transport. Better to rent or arrange a private taxi. Or there are registered taxi companies you could call.

When in SA, why not do something on the "melting pot" that is Joburg - different cultures, cuisines, etc, plus the indie music scene both the rap-infused black music scene and the white rock scene...
