BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Gilas takes opener in Australian Tour

RP SMART-Gilas beat the Australian Junior National Team 78-67 in their first game Down Under. Close game from start to finish. The Aussie team was very physical and they matched the Filipinos’ speed and quickness. Plus, they had the height! Gilas’ guards got a taste of their own medicine with their Australian guards harassing them no end. The Baby Boomers utilized their size advantage by covering Gilas’ outside shooters. JR Cawaling, RJ Jazul and Greg Slaughter were the ones that carried the team tonight. Only RJ was connecting from the outside. JR was on fire in the second half and Greg was able to use his size as he defended and rebounded well throughout the whole game.

Gilas 78 -- Cawaling 19, Barroca 12, Aguilar 12, Tiu 8, Baracel 7, Slaughter 6, Ababou 5, Jazul 5, Ballesteros 4, Sison 0

Emus Australia 67 -- Hadziomerovic 12, Sinclair 11, Wroe 10, Drmic 9, Aldridge 6, Trist 6, Creek 5, Fenton 4, Barry 2, McCarron 2
