BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Goofballs

Iverson time
Allen Iverson arrived at the Wachovia Center five minutes before tip-off in his first game back with Philadelphia. If that didn't raise anyone's eyebrows then Exhibit B should. Sixers coach Eddie Jordan said that it was no big deal and that they don't make any adjustments five minutes before the game. WTF are you saying? Then he says that he will only take out the Cancer when he feels like it. Exhibit C shows that the Sixers were playing the visiting Denver Nuggets. Iverson's former team. If that doesn't get one up for a match then I don't know what else
will. Then there's that drama about kissing the Sixers' logo during introductions. If you think that somethings never change then be reminded that in Iverson's rookie debut with the Sixers they lost the match. Then as in today, Philadelphia lost to Denver. Is the score relevant?

As a writer put it, Philadelphians went to watch #3 and they watched watched consecutive loss #10.

Best of Three. Or we want your money.
Still on the topic of basketball, I am wondering why the Philippine Collegiate Champions League title match is a best-of-three series? All throughout the tournament it's a knockout affair then in the finals people go greedy. A one-match winner-take-all thingamajig should have been it. Totally suspicious and moronic.

Bill Walton Redux
Greg Oden is out for the season with another knee injury. I just feel bad for the guy and the Portland Trailblazers. Seriously, when was the last time they had a center who was plenty good for a couple of years -- Kevin Duckworth? When they got Arvydas Sabonis he was way past his prime and Shaq just killed him. That streak of bad luck goes all the way to Bill Walton, Sam Bowie, and now Oden.
