BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Surfing with the alien, er, Australian

Australian surfer dude Garrett Parkes won the 2009  Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational Surfing Championship over Hawaiian Makua Rothman last Wednesday October 28 on Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

Parkes beat Joel Nantes and local boy Carlito Nogalo as all three surgers mixed innovative, new-school manouevers with aerials, on-rail carves and barrel rides to form 3-4 feet waves.

The Aussie scored 5.50 and 4.67 in the extended 35 minute final.

"It wasn't exactly the real cloud 9, not many barrels. But I made do with what I had. I managed to get through a few heats this morning and just keep it going through to the final. I'm stoked," said Parkes, who earned US$7,500 for the win.
