BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

5 Football Questions

1. Liverpool. All is not lost but all is not good for Rafa Benitez. Guess but if they tumble out of everything then that's it for him. It is a desperate time for this club as they lack rhythm and look dispirited when they are behind.

2. Lyon has a very good squad this year. In fact, I figure then to win it all again. As for them beating Liverpool, well, the Reds have not played well even during the summer. But Lyon is just locked in. So good win for my fave Ligue 1 team.
3. So why is Pepe Reina saying that getting knocked out of the early stages of the UCL isn't a disaster for Liverpool? See here -- he is just defending Benitez, his Spanish compatriot. But that is a delusional statement. They will get crucified for that. It's only in the UCL where they play well when they bomb out in the EPL. But it ain't over til it's over.
4. What's wrong with the Reds? Their defense is horrendous but the team isn't 100%. Many are injured and the team doesn't seem to jell with some new parts.
5. My predictions for Euro football: In Spain -- Barcelona in a photo finish; in France, Lyon, in Italy it's Internazionale running away (although my Juventus will be within striking distance and if they win some big ones will pip these several time defending champs), and in Germany... Schalke 04.
