BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Smart Gilas Pilipinas notes

Save the women and children first! Man... whatta pair of slams.

So what did Yeng Guiao say to Japeth Aguilar early in the first quarter as the young center committed a turnover?

Quiet lang tayo. Mahirap na.

Had a short chat with Letran coach Louie Alas this afternoon. He is staying with Letran and not transferring anywhere else. Well, aside from mentoring the Philippine Patriots in the Asean Basketball League. One of his players, Rey Guevarra suffered an ACL injury with about a minute left in their match last Friday against San Beda.

Rey was distraught as he and RJ Jazul have led the Letran Knights to a Final Four berth with a 12-6 record in the NCAA and Smart Gilas Pilipinas has resumed practicing as a unit.

According to Gilas coach Rajko Toroman, once the collegiate basketball season is over, management will look into the possible addition of Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Paul Lee and Junmar Fajardo. In the event that Lee is unavailable -- since Chris Lutz won't be able to join them until about May of 2010, Ryan Buenafe could be elevated from the pool. Buenafe will definitely not be in the line-up for the Philippine Cup stint of Gilas but he could join them in the tournaments afterwards.

One night after its demolition of Powerade Pilipinas, Smart Gilas took on the Philippine Patriots, the team that will represent the country in the Asean Basketball League. The Patriots had in tow Jason Dixon, a former Coca Cola import and Brandon Powell, a teammate of Chicago Bull Joakim Noah with the University of Florida. The Patriots also had Jerwin Gaco, Froilan Baguion, Dino Daa, Christian Coronel, Khasim Mirza, and Mark Andaya among others in their line-up. But the nationals were too much for them as they ran them off the court 87-66. Gilas raced to their largest lead with CJ Giles and Japeth Aguilar on the bench.
