BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Real Big Fish: NU stuns DLSU 63-61

NSational University closed out their disappointing season with a rousing win as they played the spoiler's role once more when they pipped La Salle 63-61 to give them three victories in 14 games while rudely slamming the door shut on the Green Archers' hopes of a play-off for a Final Four slot.

The Bulldogs' Jewel Ponferrada blocked Hyram Bagatsing's shot with time running down and team captain Mervin Baloran corralled the loose ball with 0.1 left on the game clock. While he missed five free throws that could have rendered any La Salle shot moot and academic, this time there simply wasn't much DLSU could do with a catch and shoot from the far end of the court.

The win by NU was their first over DLSU since August 31, 2003 when they ran the Green Archers off the court with a 80-59 win. Said NU Coach Manny Dandan, "Binigay na ng mga bata lahat sa last game. We didn't think of the others and their situation. Gusto lang namin manalo. We wanted to end our season on a good note. To build for next season.”

We are in the rebuilding process,” said DLSU Coach Franz Pumaren after the game. “I guess the guys that were supposed to be the shepherds of this team failed to guide the young players. Being a young team probably took its toll already during the crucial stretches in the past games.”
