Leo Austria knocked on the door of the Press Room at the Araneta Coliseum and as he entered, the assembled media broke out into applause.
The Falcons coach wasn’t aware that the Falcons had a five year losing streak to La Salle with a stunning 61-55 victory to notch W#2 in eight matches. What he was aware of and greatly cared for was his team’s five-game losing skid by an average difference of 4.8 points.
They lost to the La Salle 64-63 and UE in double overtime 95-91. “’Yung five losses, talagang hindi ako pinatulog noon dahil hinahanap ko kung saan nagkamali. Kung ano ano at sino sino na ang sinisisi ko kasama na rin ako. “Pero sabi ko sa kanila, ‘yung mga lapses natin the last five games, ma-reredeem niyo sarili ninyo kapag nanalo tayo sa La Salle.”
Jan Colina and Alex Nuyles led Adamson’s charge as they wrested the early6-3 lead from the Green Archers by taking good care of the ball and taking it inside. Colina top scored for his side with 14 points and five rebounds while Nuyles added 10. Leo Canuday, who was a rookie on that Adamson team that dealt DLSU a 64-62 loss on July 24, 2004, hit a huge trey that gave the Falcons a 58-42 lead; their biggest in the game.
Joshua Webb who played a career game versus Ateneo last Sunday where he scored 27 points finished with a lowly output of 3 markers and did not grab a rebound. His team seemed lethargic and came alive only in the final minutes where their rally was cut short.
Austria praised Webb for his spunk and emerging game and politely resisted a jab at the Green Archer who kicked at his son, Bacon, during last Sunday’s Ateneo-La Salle game. He then went to extol his son’s basketball achievements since grade school in Ateneo.
