BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

My thoughts on the Ateneo-La Salle first round game

Stop complaining and play the game! Go out and dominate!

My thoughts on the game:

- Ateneo should respect all teams. Don't tell me they do because the way they guard opponents doesn't show that. If anything, the game showed that DLSU is that damn good and if they don't make their mark this year then watch out next season.

- Rabeh Al-Hussaini, get well. But dude, you have to play better defense and rebound some. C'mon... one board?!

- Why don't we keep Ryan Buenafe on the court longer? How versatile is this guy? He brings down the ball, can break down opponents on the fly and in a halfcourt set, can pass, rebound, and play great defense. What I want to look at it the shooting percentage of the players he guards. I figure it's mostly low.

We nearly paid for that match-up substitution when we had the small guys in with .8 left in the game. Keep Ryan in the game!

- Enough with those pre-game prayers. Please. Let's not be hypocrites.

- What's up with the constant booing of the other side's gallery? They've been doing that for years even when we cheer. Well, we got the win and that's what is important.

- Can we see more playing time for Oping Sumalinog? Sayang yung pinakita nung pre-season eh bangko naman. We do not need Rabeh chasing the other players outside because it takes away from the team defense and rebounding. Oping, Nico, and Kirk can do that.

- I knew Rabeh was okay and could play the next game because he walked under his own power to the media room. Unlike in last year's finals that injury was a little more severe.

- So it looks like the young guns of La Salle have taken over. Their vets -- Mangahas, Barua, and Ferdinand didn't do much. And to those who bully Joshua Webb in DLSU, go easy on him. He's a prick but he's your prick.

- And now to something bigger.... where are the damn tickets? Supposedly there are more tickets but why were there only 15,000 distributed? I know the Coliseum can sit more than 20K. Like last year's cheer dance competition broke the record so what gives? So theoretically there should be at least 10k per school. Someone has a lot of explaining to do.

- Since we're on that topic, I sincerely hope that when SM's new arena is put up in the Mall of Asia area, the UAAP moves there kahit malayo. Araneta Coliseum and its management sucks big time. Mahirap kasi nagiisa sila so they dictate terms. Some competition wouldn't hurt.

- And UAAP are you ready to welcome San Beda and JRU in 2011?
