BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Bash 'em up in Fenway

Now that the Yankees have taken the series opener in Boston with a 20-11 win, the head-to-head match up this season is 8-5 in favor of the Red Sox. New York has narrowed the gap in that match-up and have opened up a 7 1/2 game lead for the American League East title.

There were tense moments as the Yankee relief pitchers Damaso Marte and Sergio Mitre gave up several runs to Boston in the last inning but the Bronx Bombers didn't let up the assault as they poured it on until the ninth inning. Nice win for starting pitcher Andy Pettitte who is now at 10-6 while Boston counterpart Brad Penny is at 7-8.
