The Philippines lost a double-digit lead to Japan and ultimately the game 87-85 to fall to 1-3 in the 31st staging of the William Jones Cup.
With the score at 86-82 in favor of Japan, Jared Dillinger found the bottom of the net with a far out trey with 4 seconds left in the match to cut the deficit to 1 point.
In Japan's next play, Shinsuke Kashiwagi was fouled by Jay Jay Helterbrand on the next play but the Nippon team point guard converted on only one free throw to make it a 2-point lead at 87-85.
In the Philippine team's final offensive, Kashiwagi batted away Helterbrand's last gasp attempt to preserve their lead for the win.
The Philippines was hurt by 24 turnovers (to Japan's 15) and they preferred to take shots from the outside as opposed to driving to the basket where they only attempted 9 free throws (Japan shot 33 free throws and made 24 of them).
