BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Thoughts about hanging with the Smart Gilas RP Team and the FIBA tournament

One of the fun things about being here is not just seeing Jakarta again after a long time. It's not just attending an international competition (not held in the Philippines). I'll have to admit the last one is pretty cool itself but its perhaps hanging out with the team in the coffee shop of the hotel or in the restaurant. Chatting on the team bus.

And then its cheering for guys I did not root for in collegiate play.

The two most influential guys on this team (outside the SBP officials and the coaching staff): Chris Tiu and Mac Baracael.

Mac is the Man!

Am doing a piece on the imports here. Having fun also talking to the other teams here.

When you see me back in Manila, ask me the secret of how Alexander the Great conquered the world. Or you can ask Jayvee Casio. Hahahaha. He would know too.

All that spicy food... I am so glad I saw an A&W Restaurant! Root beer float yeah!

Those Koreans sure could shoot. I spoke with their coach; it's mandatory that everyone, even the centers can shoot outside. In the vernacular, walang butas sa kanilang opensa.

You know what I said about the officiating here? It sucks. Worse than sucks. You will appreciate the sucky refs back home after seeing how it goes here. But there is an explanation. Will write about that in the next few days.
