BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The World Baseball Classic is back

I honestly thought that the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006 was a nice concept. Except that the odd rules and even the participating countries turned it into a joke. The organizing body tweaked in now into a double-round robin format and well, we'll see now.

But here are the four teams that I'm going to tab to make it to the semi-final crossover:

Pool A: Korea
Pool B: Cuba
Pool C: USA
Pool D: Dominican Republic

I kind of like Korea to win this. They won the gold medal in the Beijing Olympics and they are real hungry after the upset by Japan in the first WBC. And they return for the second straight time with the coolest uniforms. Hahahaha.
