BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Going down in Liverpool

Jeez. I can't believe how Liverpool totally manhandled the defending Spanish champions this way. Four goals -- two by Stevie G, one by Fernando Torres, and 1 by Andrea Dossena sent Los Blancos packing with a 5-0 aggregate win and a move on to the Round of Eight.

Then this weekend, its a trip to Old Trafford for the second dust up with Manchester United. This right here is for the Premiership.

And I'll leave you with the opening lyrics from the only song by the Bangles that I like: Going Down to Liverpool."

Hey now
Where you going with that load of nothing in your hand

I said, hey now
All through this green and pleasant land.

I'm going down to Liverpool to do nothing
I'm going down to Liverpool to do nothing
I'm going down to Liverpool to do nothing
All the days of my life
All the days of my life

Oh these fabulous European nights when Liverpool shows its worth. But look around you, the holdovers from the 2005 Championship and those who played again in 2007 are dwindling. It's just Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyppia, and Xabi Alonso.

One of my favorite Liverpool players -- John Arne Riise is now with AS Roma.

Hope they move on so there's something to cheer about.
