BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Three points back. Two points down.

Finally! A win in Anfield. Yet Rafa Benitez still sucks. Liverpool beat 10-man Chelsea thanks to two late strikes (89nth and 90th minute) by Fernando Torres who has struggled all season. Now they're within striking range of Manchester United (two points behind).

Did the red card to Frank Lampard affect Chelsea? Of course it did. Anytime you play with a man down that changes things as Chelsea hoped to come away with at least a draw.

But give credit to Liverpool as they totally dominated the game. It looked like they were headed for a draw until Torres came through.

And what do you know? Benitez used what a fraction of his brainpower when he inserted what could be Liverpool's best starting XI:

Pepe Reina

Jamie Carragher Fabio Aurelio

Martin Skrtel Alvaro Arbeola

Xabi Alonso

Javier Mascherano

Dirk Kuyt Steven Gerrard Alberto Riera

Fernando Torres
