BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

What can you glean out of all this winning and losing?

Of the 30 NBA clubs, only 12 have a winning record (or better than .500). Of that 12, only 6 have won NBA titles since the rookie season of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Of those 12 winning clubs, two have yet to hold up a championship trophy. Again, only half of the dozen teams play in big markets.

So is it also safe to say that the more monied clubs have better chances at winning? Most definitely!

Detroit, which is the bottom tier, is the exception to having won the most number of NBA (includes NBL and ABA) titles despite an over-all losing record.

The winning teams:
Los Angeles Lakers
- 2905 wins 1824 losses 15 titles
Boston Celtics - 2875 wins 1981 losses 17 titles

Tracy McGrady is once more out with that troublesome back of his.
Once more the Rockets start off well. The question is now -- will they fizzle out again?
