As a youngster, I only followed my favorite sports teams and outside of them, I almost knew nothing.
The first time I figured that Hull City had a football team was in the Housemartins' first album London 0 Hull 4. In case you don't know, that 80's British band featured Norman Cook who became more popular as Fatboy Slim and the rest of his bandmates Dave Heaton and Paul Hemingway along with their roadie Sean Welsh formed the Beautiful South, another Pop Rock band.
Of course, in recent years, I already knew that Hull had a respectable football side when Phil Brown was steering it clear of the bottom of the division. When they got promoted to the first division after last season, I had to wonder if the Tigers (as Hull is nicknamed) would be relegated after only one year in the Premier League. The other team that was promoted, Stoke City, is doing well.
See here, in the 15 years of the English Premier League, there have been 21 clubs instantly relegated after their promotion to top flight football. And after 104 years of football, you'd think that Hull will not want to let go of its handhold on the best football league in the world.
In their first game of the season, they dispatched Fulham 2-1, drew with Everton 2-2, beat Arsenal 2-1, and now tripped struggling Tottenham 1-0. They are currently in 3rd place in the standings with 4 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties with 14 points. One point ahead of Arsenal. They'll be playing West Ham and West Brom -- two squads in the Top 10 thus far -- in the next couple of weeks.
Hull is led by keeper Boaz Myhill and a trio of brilliant midfielders in Michael Turner, Marcio Geovanni, and Richard Garcia.
In stark contrast, Tottenham despite having Roman Pavlyuchenko, Luka Modric, and Jonathan Woodgate have stumbled out of the gates. They have yet to win a game in 7 matches and manager Juande Ramos is on the hot seat.
