BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Season Exit Interviews: Manny Dandan (NU)

We're doing the same interviews with the coaches and here's the first.

Rick: How would you assess the Bulldogs’ performance this UAAP season?
Coach Dandan: That’s a very tricky question. There were games I feel we should have won but our shallow bench and disparity in talent was our undoing. We lacked depth in certain positions. You could see the immaturity of the young players as well.

Rick: If there’s anything you would have done differently what would it be?
Coach Dandan: I always stick to my strengths which is being prepared coming to a game. If there’s anything, it would be loading up properly on talents during the past few years.

Rick: What’s next for your team?
Coach Manny: We are conducting open tryouts this coming October 6 at the e-commerce building of the Mall of Asia. We will evaluate everyone and see how they fit in. Hans Sy (the new owner of National University) wants to win a title in four years and that’s the direction we are headed.

Rick: Who do you think will win the UAAP title?
Coach Manny: Ateneo. Chris Tiu is playing top level basketball. Rabeh Al-Hussaini is very consistent; a huge factor in the team’s success and the supporting cast of sila Jai Reyes, Eric Salamat, sina Nonoy Baclao…. Norman (Black) has the right combinations.

Rick: I'm trying out!
