BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The Umbrella Man Cometh

Basketball barker Rolly Manlapaz in my opinion is one of the best voice talents we have out there. I worked with him in the Fight! Fight! The Story of the Blue & White documentary and the guy is just awesome. During game time, he definitely adds spice to the game with the way he pronounces Hans Thiele's surname and when he calls out NU's Jerome Tungcul... the Umbrella Man.

I asked Rolly about Tungcul's startling monicker and the vet barker revealed that Tungcul once borrowed an umbrella when the rain was pouring and the Bulldog guard never returned it. And on another occasion, he asked Manlapaz again for an umbrella during one downpour!

So there you have it folks, mystery solved.
