BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

There goes that connection

The New York Yankees ironically got their start as the old old Baltimore Orioles in the nascent Major League Baseball. Then they received a blood transfusion when they were stocked by former Boston Red Sox. A tradition that continued through the years beginning with babe Ruth down to Wally Schang, Carl Mays, Everett Scott and GM Ed Barrow who presided over the building of the first ever Yankees' dynasty. We've seen a lot transfer later from the Sox' former slugger Wade Boggs and Manager Don Zimmer to Johnny Damon.

Now guess who hopes to add more spice to this rivalry? Native New Yorker Manny Ramirez who helped Boston win two World Series titles. Now with the LA Dodgers, he said that he hopes to go to the Yankees and make Boston pay. Now will Hank Steinbrenner take the bait?

In the picture, Ramirez homers for the Dodgers and slaps the hand of former Yankee coach Larry Bowa who is now on the staff for LA which stocked with former Yanks like Joe Torre and Don Mattingly.
