BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Show me the money

I remember talking to my old classmate Vanni De Sequera while doing a piece for Homestyle Magazine and I asked him if the local magazine industry is doing well what with the glut in the stands. He said that not many sell and people like putting a magazine out if they have extra cash to spend and because it looks good in one's portfolio.

And that brings to mind, the world's noveau rich who buy football clubs in the English Premier League.

So what do local taipans do?

They buy UAAP schools. There are the Tans for UE. The Sys for NU. I don't know if you can say the Gokongweis for Ateneo since it's only the JG SOM they've helped. But there you have it.

Now anyone remember from sometime last year that rich Russian who wanted to purchase a B-52 bomber on the spot during an airshow in Moscow?
