BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The Truth About the Jersey or Dodging A Bullet

In case you've heard about a protest by UP about Vince Burke and Kirk Long's wrong jersey, here's what happened:

Last summer, during an advertising photo shoot for the Blue Eagles by adidas, the team was provided a jersey that had all the right logos except for the "SMART" patch on the upper left. It was meant for the photo shoot and the summer league.

Before the start of the UAAP season, every team member was issued four jerseys each with the correct logos including the "Smart" one.

Turns out that Kirk and Vince brought the wrong ones to the UP game since they are nearly identical.

Some people noticed the shot taken by photog Philip Sison and by Sunday, the picture was filtered around and in the light of the Sam Ekwe/San Beda flap over the wrong jersey there was talk of a protest but the UP brass decided not to push through with it.

The picture was taken down from the Fabilioh site; a wrong move in my opinion because it is like they are being asked to hide something. You know how some people are who like to twist things and there are some who would love to see Ateneo pay for this more so since we got off the hook with the Kirk Long-Zion Laterre substitution last year.

I know that the American pro teams have an equipment manager whose job it is to hand over the jerseys for every game (among his many other duties). It also prevents players from forgetting to bring the wrong one or even forgetting them.

The make up of local teams especially college ones is different so I figure this will have to be one of those grocery list things to check and look out for before every game.
