BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

CCL Power Rankings Week 3

1. UE - Overcame a superb performance by UST’s Jervy Cruz. Might have trouble against bigger teams due to weakness in the front court. Big game from forwards Hans Thiele and Elmer Espiritu.

2. ADMU - Chris Tiu made sure his final season started with a bang and the defense did the rest as the Eagles got past archrival DLSU Archers in their season opener. Chris Tiu is Mr. Clutch. Impressive showing by their rookies, especially Ryan Buenafe.

3. SBC - Despite a week's inactivity, the Red Lions are still in the top five. Has the deepest line-up among all teams.

4. LETRAN - Early leaders with convincing wins over JRU and CSB. RJ Jazul is the league’s most dangerous shooter. He has more than enough help this year with guys like John Foronda and Kojak Melegrito stepping up.

5. DLSU - Still showed signs of brilliance despite losing to archrival Ateneo. Rico Maierhofer and JV Casio played well. Always a lot stronger in September than they are in July. Some key players are still injured.

6. FEU Hard-earned win against the Adamson Falcons. Seem to have the kind of strong, athletic team like they did during the Arwind Santos years. Depth of the team should surface soon and make it tougher for other squads in future games.

7. UST - The recovering Jervy Cruz sent a huge message to the league by playing a monstrous game scoring 26pts and grabbing 22 rebounds

8. MAPUA - Bounced back from opening-day beating at the hands of the Red Lions to defeat the Stags. Slowly finding their groove.

9. ADAMSON - Almost pulled an upset against the Tamaraws. Michael Galinato’s 21pts and 10 rebounds output, a perfect complement to the Falcons’ already-vaunted backcourt.

10. CSB - Coach Gee Abanilla has transformed this team from mediocre to a hardworking one. Archie David and Angelo Montecastro are coming up huge for the Blazers.

11. ARELLANO - Favored to bag the NCRAA title when the tourney begins later this year.

12. JRU - Suffered consecutive losses, including one against the Stags where they blew a big second-half lead. JR Sena is turning out to be a reliable big man.

13. STI - The NAASCU champs are poised to repeat this year.

14. UP - Last year's winless team made a promising debut, upsetting the NU Bulldogs by 14.
