BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

It could happen, ya know!

Boston vs. LA.

It could happen you know. Some say that because Boston struggled against Atlanta then they might not even get past Cleveland, let alone the battle tested San Antonio Spurs.

Well, they'll pick up the pace and barring an upset for the purple and gold and the green and white, they could face off in the finals ; their first since Ronald Reagan was President of the United States.

How do they stack up? Here's a different way of looking at things.

The Big Three vs. The Big Three
Da Kid, the Truth, and Jesus vs. Black Mamba, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom.
The Celtics own the edge here that's why The Big Three2K all have their own nicknames. And former Laker, the Big Aristotle, was quoted as saying to a Boston reporter in 2001, "Take this down. 'My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the motherfucking truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth.'"
ADVANTAGE: Boston

Head-to-Head
In 1984, '85, and '87, the Celtics and the Lakers figured in three finals' series. LA won two to Boston's one. It should be noted that the team that won the season series (home and away) went on to win the title.

This year, Boston took both games from the Los Angeles. In the playoffs, you can throw the stats outside the window, but still...
ADVANTAGE: Boston

Bench Depth
Pretty much even, but the Lakers have more gifted passers in Bryant, Gasol, Odom, and Luke Walton.
ADVANTAGE: Los Angeles

Coaching staff
Big Chief Triangle has won in the CBA and the NBA with 10 championships total to prove it. Glen Rivers who was given a new lease on life when KG and Ray Allen moved east is still suspect when it comes to strategic chops.
ADVANTAGE: Los Angeles

Fear Factor:
Kobe Bryant after trading elbows and taunts with Ray Allen: "Don't even put me and that dude in the same breath."
Kevin Garnett: using his finger to depict going for the jugular
Paul Pierce: a menacing stare at Al Horford and the Atlanta Hawks (a gang-like gesture said the League for which they fined Pierce)
ADVANTAGE: Boston

Celebrities:
Hollywood vs. Big Papi. No contest.
ADVANTAGE: Los Angeles

Outcome: Boston in 6.

So why Boston if they're tied at 3-3 in this weird criteria?

Simple. Homecourt advantage, baybee!
