BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Azkals versus Tajikistan

The Azkals will be going up against group defending champion Tajikistan today at 3:30pm with the game shown live on Solar Sports (hopefully with less Eat Bulaga commentary).

RP team coach Nonoy Fegidero will be playing a side that resembles them only faster and stronger. The Tajikistan team plays a 442 formation that occasionally flexes into a 352. The Azkals will play a more defensive-oriented game and hope that their defensive stand will lead to swift counters. Everyone's healthy for the game and it looks like James Younghusband will start today alongside his brother Phil.

Fegidero expressed confidence in the team and the locals who played well in their initial outing against Brunei. Jason Cordova's partnership with Ali Borromeo in the backline was vital to the defensive stand. The former who played a sterling campaign for FEU in the last UAAP football tournament is one of the new inclusions to the team because of his strength, range, and power. "Tinututukan ko talaga (Cordova) sa development kasi marami siya maitutulong sa team," said the coach.

Team Philippines had hoped to extend their 1-0 lead with numerous scoring chances that were denied by great goalkeeping, the crossbar, and the water puddles. Brunei's South Korean coach congratulated the Azkals and was only too glad to come away with a 1-nil loss.

"Sana tuloy tuloy lang yung magandang laro at yung suporta ng bayan," said the coach after yesterday's practice. "Hindi lagi meron homefield advantage."

In related news, the National Team jersey is available now in all Mizuno stores (while supplies last) and they fetch for Php 1,995. There are two colors the white and the red. The red version pictured here -- in my opinion -- looks better.

And word about the PFF now is... it's a bloody mess. So what else is new. Six months are over, Mari. So what have you done?
