BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Don't worry your pretty head like this or darn that serve!

Don't you wish we could pull off something like this here in the Philippines?

The JB Group is the first Indian company in Hong Kong to sponsor an international tennis match with an eight-woman field that featured Serbia's Ana Ivanovic, USA's Venus Williams, Russia's Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva, and Anna Chakvetadze, China's Peng Shuai, Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova and Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki.

For the finals, last January 5, it was down to Williams and Sharapova. Unfortunately, Masha's erratic play (and Williams' great play) and serve did her in 6-4 6-3. It may have been an exhibition series but with the Aussie Open coming up, Sharapova has to really work on her game lest she have another poor year like in 2007.
