BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

America Is That Way

As much as I like Beckham in Major League Soccer, if more players like Luis Figo move over from Europe that is what is going to help the game in North America.

Figo who is recovering from an injury has refused so far to discuss the potential move, but clearly the interest is there. But that would help the game because Beckham's strength as much as I hate to say it lies in his free kicks and crosses and selling kits. Midfielders like Figo who are playmakers will help the game flourish. Even at the age of 35, Figo still has a couple of good years left in the game. He's made his money now is the time to give it back and help make football a huge sport in the northern hemisphere.

Now if MLS can only snag a disgruntled Ronaldinho from Barca...
