BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Lady Eagles Commemorative Book

Here's an excerpt on the Lady Eagles book we're writing. It should be out by December.

Seventh-year coach John Anthony Flores who had turned the once moribund women’s program around with deft recruiting and an uncompromising system knew that there were to be no easy wins this year. His team’s response to Tioseco’s temporary absence would determine the season’s fate. Although the game was played on even terms as De La Salle stepped up to the plate sans their star player Kristine Alon Alon, it was nevertheless a huge acid test for the team.

In their first round match-up with the Lady Archers, the Taft girls bucked Ateneo’s height advantage to give them some fits. But Ateneo easily handled La Salle’s press to put the game in the bag with time down to less than a minute to knot the final count at 61-53 in favor of the girls in blue.

“It was a statement game for us,” said second year guard Treena Limgenco. “Cassy wasn’t around so it emboldened La Salle. But we're every bit determined to show our collective strength. Everyone needed to step up to replace the points, rebounds, and blocked shots that Cassy normally gives us.”
