BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Will there be an encore in Emirates? Thierry Henry back to Arsenal?

Word is Thierry Henry could be back in the English Premier League next season even if he is doing well with Barcelona. The Catalan club hopes to land Henry's fellow Les Bleus teammates Yoann Gourcuff or Franck Ribery in the offseason.

Is a reunion with former boss Arsene Wenger in the offing or will he go to another club? If he becomes available, will Manchester City offer him the moon?

The French international I'd say still has a few more good years in him. If I were Barca, I'd hold on to him as they have their Holy Trinity of Lionel Messi, Sam Eto'o, and Henry. Does that put the fear of God in oppossing goalkeepers or what?

And speaking of Lionel Messi, I'll go on record to say that he will be the next FIFA player of the year.

How time flies, yes? It's the World Cup again next year.

PBA scuttlebutt

When LA Tenorio was informed that he was being traded to Alaska, he was told outside Jollibee along Katipunan. Imagine! Very informal and so impolite. He asked that person, "Ano ba ang hindi ko nagawa para sa San Miguel?" The said person could not answer and only scratched his head.

The trade as we all know it was a dud. And San Miguel has been sending feelers for a possible trade once more involving Tenorio. In the words of a coach from Alaska, "Binigyan niyo nga kami ng regalo tapos isasauli namin?"

Well, word is Wesley Gonzales is on his way out of San Miguel too. Not confirmed though... to Burger King.

Can coaches be traded too? Please.

After Game 5 between Alaska and Talk N Text, LA had to be brought to the hospital for some fluids owing to dehydration. Something about playing a lot of minutes and all that pressure. If you recall, he had that same problem back in Ateneo.

Hmm. Some people from this er... whatever have been giving Coach Chot Reyes a hard time. Seems to me that they think they're good coaches when they're nothing but a bunch of fat slobs. Give the man credit, he led TNT to the Finals in his first year on the job.

Remember this...

The last four times Boston and Los Angeles went against each other in the NBA Finals, whoever won the season series won the championship. This year, the Lakers won both including their road match in Beantown 110-109 OT. So if they face each other again...

Wouldn't you like to spend time with her? Oh, it's a Rolex!

Sideline Slants

Lionel Messi scored twice in Barcelona's 2-1 win over Racing Satander that gave his side a 12-point lead over Real Madrid in the La Liga standings. The second goal was the 5,000th goal in Barcelona history and it wasn't only for a win but it also goes to the Catalan club's museum. Four days later, Thierry Henry and Rafael Marquez add to more to the toal to give Barca a 2-0 win over Mallorca in the Copa Del Rey semi-finals first leg.

David Beckham asks for a permanent transfer to AC Milan. The LA Galaxy should ask for Ronaldinho in exchange. Let the Spice Boy and his Italian club pay.

Steven Gerrard is out for three weeks. Now how does that tell on Liverpool's chances in the English premier League? He is a proven winner and his presence can spell his side's success. Hey, Rafa. What's your next excuse?

Alaska and Talk N Text are now tied at 2-2. Did I see it this way? Yup. All the past PBA Finals have gone to seven games. I'm not implying anything. Promise!

Willie Miller wins the Best Player of the Conference Award. I honestly thought Mark Cardona was going to win it and as good as Miller was, maybe it should have gone to Captain Hook. But I guess he's not the most popular guy around. Medyo bawas angas, bro. It's not helping.

Kellogg's drops Michael Phelps as its endorser. That was a dope deal in the first place, champ! Now you've lost it. But if you ask me, it was a perfect time for the cereal giant to save on money.

Hold it now... USA Swimming suspends Phelps for three months.

And the hits just keep on rolling (paper). God! What's with all these bad puns?! Bwahahahaha. Hey, this is not kicking a dog when it's down. But Phelps dropped it.

Manny Ramirez rejects the LA Dodgers. Hmm. Is he heading back eastward?

Ray Allen goes to the All-Star Game. It's about time. Now the East has got Jesus.

A couple of good things about Super Bowl XLIII: seeing Cuba Gooding Jr. in the stands and the Transformers II teaser.

The Top 5 Excuses for a Season Gone Awry

Excuse #1 The system doesn't work. Our opponents can read it already.
Me answer: Absolute bullshit. We didn't hear that on the way to last year's Finals. And I caught many on video extolling its virtues. We've been running the offense for years and you would think that our foes would have caught on even during the three-peat years. Besides, what has changed in FEU's or UST's system? Not much. They still play the same way. They even start the same way against us -- a long ball off the kick off to test our keeper.

And didn't Germany know that Spain was running a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 depending on who's on the pitch? Luis Aragones has pretty much employed that system since the 2006 World Cup.

On a non-football analogy, hasn't Phil Jackson been running the triangle offense since the Berlin Wall was still up. So how come the Lakers have still been successful and currently own the best record in the NBA?

The correct answer here is the newbies have not wholly adapted to the system and the other vets have not functioned. The team starts four rookies -- Anton Amistoso, Miko Manglapus, Joel Faustino, and Paul Cheng. All hold key positions. And they can be taught all the skills or plays but ultimately they have to go out there and execute it. The strange this is they are able to get it going during practice or even more tellingly, the pre-season. So what gives?

That's exactly it. It's the pre-season. Not everyone goes full throttle during the pre-season. The main UAAP tourney is a different animal altogether.

Excuse #2 The coach isn't a great motivator.
Me answer: Define motivation? Is it speeches that make your hair stand up so you get pumped up then you're the dude who needs to watch porn first before you get a hard on. If you've been with the varsity since you were in grade school and I will assume that you were, you've probably heard ever motivational speech that Barack Obama wishes he could have thought of. So if that's your definition of motivation then we'll talk you to death next time.

If your other definition is the coach doesn't give enough encouragement and he cusses you out. Hold it. Getting all those minutes on the pitch isn't enough? The fact that he's playing you means something. If you get cussed then look at it this way -- how the hell does Hans Smit get results from his team now when they are starting eight rookies! And by Smit's own admission, his Green Booters are a year or two away from realizing their true potential.

Now if putting on the blue and white with "Ateneo" in front isn't enough to get you to play hard then I suggest you drop the blue and wear white forever. As in the white flag of surrender.

Excuse #3 RS Mantos is not playing.
Me answer: Sure that's tough missing last year's best goalkeeper. But was the concentration there at all considering his opening day gaffe that will forever live in infamy? Besides, shouldn't you step up on your game and play harder? On a non-football analogy, remember when the LA Lakers lost Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Game 5 of the 1980 NBA Finals and Earvin Magic Johnson stepped up and played center in Game 6 and led his side to the title?

Okay, not convinced because that was one game? Here's a football example. In 1962, a 21-year old Pele suffered a leg injury in Brazil's second game of the World Cup that knocked him out the rest of the way. Brazil were the defending champs then and Pele was the previous World Cup's second leading goal scorer. Garrincha strapped the team on his back and led Brazil once more to the title.

Excuse #4 The team lacks leadership.
Me answer: Is this a knock on the team captain? I suspect that rather than hold themselves accountable for poor performances, it's best to blame others. Losing tends to bring out the worst in people. I wonder what people will say if we win our next five games.

But leadership is huge especially for the captain and the vets. I hope you also saw the article on Vince Carter and the New Jersey Nets that I posted.

Many people also have to realize that for college teams it is different from a pro team. Pro teams are more focused while college teams have to deal with school, family, girlfriends, and other growing up issues. You have to give some guys props. Look at Gab Siojo. Prior to the start of the season, his pop asked him if he was going out for the weekend. He said no. Football's up. And that's the way it should be during the season -- studies and football. Nothing else. That can come later.

The modern game demands that a coach should be more than a tactician. He should also be a leader, a older brother/father figure, and a friend. It's not an easy thing to be -- all those.

Excuse #5 The offense isn't scoring. The defense sucks. Some are late for practice. This guy doesn't work as hard. This guy isn't focused. Yadda yadda yadda.
Me answer: Yup. The designated scorers haven't found the back of the net. In fact, in five matches, we have only one goal to show. And it was knocked in by the playmaking midfielder.

And yes, the defense hasn't held on quite a few occasions.

The thing is, everyone has their shortcomings but rather finger point which is not going to help or end, why not look for solutions? Why not say, I'll bust my ass and make sure that no one scores on us or some such?

In the past we only used the other tournaments as a build up to the big one. It seems that now we did well in the summer and first sem and everyone thought we'd steamroll over everyone.

Not true. As I said in the beginning... UP is on a mission but you cannot take anyone for granted. It's just that everyone is tough this year and they've been better than us so far.

The Ultimates

The Ultimates
by rick olivares

If it's the ultimate game, how come they're playing it again next year?"

Thus said Dallas running back Duane Thomas in an impeccable display of logic on the eve of Super Bowl VI in 1972 where his Cowboys would dismantle the Miami Dolphins 24-3.

So if Super Bowl XLII was the greatest ever considering the implications of a New England win (that would have given them a perfect 19-0 season record and their fourth title) as 12-point favorites and the unimaginable New York upset where they won a record 11 consecutive road games, did anyone think that it was going to be topped this year by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals?

Maybe not. Maybe as improbable as a David Tyree (who is muttered and cursed in the same breath as one Bucky Dent by the fine folks from the New England area) catch.
For all the pomp and splendor of the National Football League’s championship game, teams have been skewered 25 times by 12 points or more. Another four matches were won by at least 10 points while only 12 were decided by a touchdown or a field goal.

In the mid-1980’s, Al Davis’ Los Angeles Raiders took the fun out of the big game by fashioning the first of five routs. After that win by the silver and black, four NFC teams took the next titles by a combined 109 points taking out the life of the ultimate game.

If at this point, the millions glued to the tube were more interested in the commercials and halftime show because of the repeated laughers, Joe Montana’s San Francisco 49ers provided the MTV Generation with all drama of a taut thriller in Super Bowl XXIII that equated the NFL with life as a game of inches.

That game at the Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, Florida wasn’t as dramatic as Doug Flutie’s 63-yard Hail Mary pass to Gerald Phelan with six seconds left that gave Boston College the 1984 College National Championship that opened up American football to a modern and more international audience.

But Super Bowl XXIII was close and is the stuff of legend.
Boomer Esiason’s Cincinnati Bengals spotted the 49ers with a 20-16 lead after a field goal. There was 3:10 left to play and San Francisco began their drive at their own 8-yard line.

Sensing that his team was somewhat shaken by the Bengals’ resiliency, Montana, in a moment that cemented his “Joe Cool” reputation, uttered his famous “Hey, isn’t that John Candy” quip. It soothed frayed nerves and he led the 49ers to an 11-play 92-yard TD drive that culminated with a 10-yard reception by John Taylor with eight seconds left for the win.

The close game seemed to be an aberration as San Francisco returned to defend their title the following year and there they hammered the Denver Broncos 55-10.

Just as there was the game-winning TD, there too was the game-losing miss as the Buffalo Bills’ Scott Norwood missed a 49-yard field goal with three seconds left that gave the New York Giants the slimmest margin of victory in the Super Bowl 20-19.

And there’s the game winning-stop when St. Louis Rams linebacker Mike Jones slammed the end zone shut on Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kevin Tyson’s drive which ended at the one-yard line as time expired for a pulsating 23-16 win.

Sure the Super Bowl will be played next year (and at Miami for 10th time in league history). But who knows if anyone can top the last two years of championship football?

The ultimate game?

Nah. Wanna bet that it hasn’t been written yet?

My Best Super Bowl Games Ever:
1) XLII Giants 17 vs. Patriots 14
2) XLIII Steelers 27 vs. Cardinals 23
3) XXXIV Rams 23 vs. Titans 16
4) XXXVI Patriots 20 vs. Rams 17

5) XXV Giants 20 vs. Bills 19

6) XXIII 49ers 20 vs. Bengals 16
7) XIII Steelers 35 vs. Cowboys 31
8) XXXVIII Patriots 32 vs. Panthers 29
9) XXII Broncos 31 vs. Packers 24
10) III Jets 16 vs. Colts 7

Thursday Diary 02/05/09

Bert Honasan's eyes glowed with recognition. He clasped my hand firmly and that familiar smile of his broke out. I had not spoken to the former Ateneo football coach in ages. He quickly noted the paunch in my tummy and was dismayed. How can we play when we don't take care of ourselves.

There are two things that make people cringe when pleasantries are made -- age and weight. And I was going down for the count. We spoke for about 20 minutes catching up on a variety of things before he was off. There's an Ateneo football night in the high school this coming Saturday and I hope that I could make it. Coach Bert said he was going to be there.

In the meantime, I had to attend to a meeting that last more than three hours where someone had to explain himself about misappropriation of funds, accusations of corruption, and well, gross ignorance and incompetence. I came away feeling like puking my guts out.

It's hard to get all that psychobabble about self-righteousness when the proof is the contrary.

As a writer I have to make a decision on what is apt to write about. I told myself that I'd never do things for glory but out of what's right. And that includes taking shots at people or organizations.

Exposing the violations of the PCU sports program a couple of years ago was not an easy thing to do. I gave myself a couple of days to think about it. Others in media tried to kill the story but I stuck to my guns and eventually, came out proven right. The same thing with the UAAP report (that I obtained from someone from DLSU) on the Pep Test Scandal that Dong Puno and I came out with at the same time. And there were others as well.

Eventually I decided to stay away from "negative stuff" and tell good stories with human interest angles which is always what I enjoyed. Sure I'd take potshots every now and then especially in my annual Brewskies Awards.

Sev Sarmenta told me about a month ago that he enjoyed reading my championing the lesser known sports and teams from the Homeless World Cup Team to NU to Dacki San Diego of the Special Olympics and even the non-basketball squads.

And quite honestly, it's fun and I enjoy it too. In the coming weeks, you'll read about an unusual football team, a coach who will call his last game, and a tragic story of a sport's slow death.

The latter one starts this Monday.

Horsing around is serious business -- Prefab Sprout

That popular basketball shooting contest H-O-R-S-E has made its way to the NBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix. Three NBA players will compete in the competition that will be a part of the block party on All-Star Saturday. That should be real fun.

Speaking of horsing around, the first practice day after the Ateneo Women's Volleyball Team's loss to UST -- yesterday -- the team had light practice with an impromptu game of the vets against the rookies. Man, it was just fun as they took turns trying to outdo each other with their celebration antics after a point. Kara, you were hilarious!

Went walking/jogging yesterday late afternoon. My first since my ankle injury after a pick-up game of hoops. It still hurts like crap but I needed the exercise and action coz I was getting buggy from the inactivity. Coach Roger Gorayeb joined me for one lap around the entire Ateneo campus before he joined his team for practice. Later again after all my meets, Coach!

Busy weekend for sports. There's volleyball, football, and track and field. Re: track, got this from my bud, K... begins this Thursday and winds up on Sunday (Rizal Memorial track).
1. 100m dash Day 1- Bryan Sutingco, Mike Mendoza, Maita Mendoza
2. 110m Hurdles Day 1- Mike Mendoza
3. Shot Put Day 3- Nic Hey
4. Discus throw Day 3- Mica Sibayan
5. Pole Vault Day 4- Ezekiel Valera
6. High Jump Day 4- Itunu Kuku, Marla Santos
7. 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay Day 4
The people mentioned are either current or potential gold medalists. See you there!

An old classmate of mine, Eric Roa, added Bleachers' Brew as a blog fave in facebook. Thanks, Eric. If you're a fan of Brew, kindly add it up. It's nice to know who reads it. Muchos gracias.

First song on my iTunes this morning when Ed Formoso woke me up... The Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin.'"

"I'm glad you made it. So glad you made it. Gimme some lovin' everyday. Yeah!"

UFC 94: A brutal knockout of an event

Nate Diaz (10-2) vs Clay "The Carpenter" Guida (24-6) Lightweight bout
Are you ready? Fight!

Diaz used his eight-inch reach advantage by peppering Guida with straight jabs. Diaz was the early aggressor as he was trying to pick apart his opponent. But when it went to the ground game, after Guida slammed Diaz, the Carpenter gained control to wear out his opponent. Guida was able to place himself on top and threw a few vicious elbows when Diaz avoided a submission attempt. The Carpenter gave Diaz a knee to the head when they were able to stand up and Diaz ended the round with a leg shot of his own.

The second round was more technical battle as Guida was trying to get a kumora on Diaz while the latter was expending a lot of energy fighting off the submission maneuver. Diaz is able to throw Guida twice on the mat but he isn't able to shake him off.

Sensing that the fight was going against him, Diaz came out throwing punches. The same instructions that Guida's corner advised their man.Diaz was able to land a solid right. About a minute later, he seemed to take control as he unleashed a barrage of punches that Guida had no answer for.

But Guida is far from finished as he is able to pin Diaz to the fence and try for another submission move. But with time running out, the fight was going to the scorecards. And Guida wins it in a split decision. He is the first man to beat Nate Diaz in the octagon.

Anthony Kiedes of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Michael Clarke Duncan were in the house.

Karo "The Heat" Parisyan (26-5) vs. Dong Hyun "The Stun Gun" Kim (welterweight bout) 11-1
A battle of judokas. If Parisyan popularized the use of judo in the octagon, now he's got what he wanted. A battle of black belters in judo.

Kim almost immediately got on Parisyan's back and the Heat slammed him twice but Kim refused to let go. Kim was able to get an arm bar but Karo was able to wriggle free. But all throughout, Kim was out working him with the grappling. When they'd break the clinch, few punches were thrown.

Save for one flip, Parisyan was never able to inflict his damage and power on Kim. After three rounds, it was again... going to the judges' collective decision. Incredibly, the victory was awarded to Parisyan via split decision to a cascade of boos.

Sorry but this was highway robbery.

Stephan "The American Psycho" Bonnar (14-4) vs. Jon Jones (7-0 ) in a light heavyweight bout
Jon Jones unorthodox moves really put the comebacking Bonnar in an early fix with a couple of takedowns, a suplex, and a spinning elbow strike that sent Bonnar down hard. The American Psycho took a knee to the face before the end of the first round.

In the second round, it was more of the same as Jones scored on a reverse kick and had a couple of takedowns on Bonnar whose best hope was to turn this to a toe-to-toe slugfest and not get into the grappling and technical fighting. And Jones showed fab technique with his suplexes. The Greco-Roman background (Jones was a JUCO Champ) was throwing Bonnar off guard.

Surprisingly, Bonnar entered the third looking to clinch despite his previous troubles there and he was able to get some solid licks in. If it didn't hurt Jones, it seemed he was losing steam. He just held on in a lackluster third round that went to the judges. A unanimous decision for Jones!

Lyoto "Dragon" Machida (13-0) vs Thiago Silva (13-0) in a light heavyweight bout of unbeatens
Machida's style has been to let his opponents chase him, cause them to miss then go on a quick counter. Thrice Silva fell for it. Thrice Silva got the bejeezus knocked out of him. None more telling and brutal than a knockout punch at the end of the first round that gave Michida the 14-0.

BJ Penn vs. Georges St. Pierre Welterweight Championship
Lesson to be learned from the results of this match? Stop boasting and go out and do it. For all of Penn's talk about taking St. Pierre's strength, pride, and killing him, he was thoroughly dominated and looked overmatched as St. Pierre gave him a can of ass whuppin! He was outslugged, outkneed, and outwrestled when the game went to the canvass. It was a virtual no contest and Penn only looked more like a loser after his corner cried "No mas" after the fourth and they didn't come out to fight.

Ateneo Women's Volleyball: That Game Where They Gave UST All They Can Handle

That Game Where They Gave UST All They Can Handle
Ateneo vs. UST
21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 20-25
by rick olivares

February 1, 2009
The Arena of San Juan
After the first round match between Ateneo and UST in the Women’s Volleyball Tournament, there was much disappointment not just among the coaching staff but the players. If there was one team they wanted to play and beat it was the Tigresses, last year’s losing finalist. They knew they were capable of playing them tough but the Lady Spikers fell in three straight sets.

Though they had lost some of their mainstays, UST was still very much a good team. For Ateneo it wasn’t enough that they beat the lower tier teams but they had to beat one of those with a winning record. If there was a team they could edge out for the last bus to the semis, then it was Cesael Delos Santos’ quintet.

While his team warmed up before the start of the game, Ateneo Coach Roger Gorayeb idly sat by and expressed quiet confidence about his team. “Bibigyan namin sila ng magandang laban.”

But when the game started it seemed that his team had lapsed into its chronic bad play. At 16-8, the Ateneans didn’t seem to have an answer for the taller UST frontline of Aiza Maizo, Maika Ortiz, and Hannah Mance; the same trio that combined for 11 points off blocks in their first round encounter. And they held the Lady Spikers’ leading scorer Angeline Gervacio to a season low 9 points in the match.

Gorayeb called for time. This time, the team responded and showed UST that their true mettle.

If Delos Santos sat comfortably in his chair as his team built a seemingly insurmountable lead, by the time Ateneo was just behind by two points at 21-19, he was standing up and barking out at his players. His side ultimately prevailed as Ateneo lapsed into a series of reception errors 25-21.

The second set saw a gritty Ateneo team battle back from an early deficit to take the lead after a 17-all standoff. Gervacio and a resurgent Kara Acevedo led the attack and along with Bea Pascual and Gretchen Ho, they gave UST a dose of its own medicine with some solid defense at the net. At set point, Pascual drove a powerful shot into a hole in the backline. And then they were level.

The last thing Delos Santos wanted was for his team to give Ateneo confidence. He had seen them nearly upset FEU twice; a clear indication of the team’s potential even with only an eight-player rotation. Adamson too have to survive a five-set thriller before moving on. This team clearly wasn’t the same one they faced in the first round. They had come to play.

The third set saw a resurgent Fille Cainglet pick up the scoring slack as she pumped in most of her 9 points to keep Ateneo neck-and-neck. And Stephanie Gabriel’s heads up play at the backline gave her team a massive dose of confidence as she saved a couple of points with her hustle and poise. There was an opportunity to wrap up the third set but the Lady Spikers squandered a two point lead that the Tigresses overhauled for a crucial two sets to one lead.

If at this point UST thought that Ateneo had the wind knocked out of their sails then they had another thought coming. Despite falling into a hole early on like in the first set, Gervacio led the team into another spirited comeback. It was rather unfortunate that UST had an early lead that the team was never able to overhaul as the Tigresses wrapped up a hard fought match at 25-20.

After the match, Gorayeb felt a little bad. But not too bad. Sure his team lost but unlike the first round surrender, this time they fought back and threw in almost everything. If they could have thrown the kitchen sink they would have too. “Sayang,” he muttered. “Pero meron pa tayong laban.”

“Kita mo naman kung gugustuhin nilang lumaban kahit beterano ang katapat meron din ibibuga.”

And sometimes that’s all you can ever ask.

Phelps is Dope

Michael Phelps was caught by News of the World smoking dope at a party in USC three months after his Olympic glory.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said in the statement released by one of his agents. "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

This isn't the first embarrassing episode for Phelps after an Olympic triumph. In 2004, a few months removed from winning six gold and two bronze medals in Athens, the swimmer was arrested on a drunken driving charge at age 19. He pleaded guilty and apologized for the mistake.

Considering the trend, If Phelps competes in London, what's next? Soliciting prostitution? Gun running?

One fan at ESPN cracked (pun intended), "Holy crap! He is human!"

The incident certainly bring up that age-old debate about athletes being role models. Whatever your side, after 14 Gold Medals, there are expectations by the public rightly or wrongly. But keep in mind that athletes or celebrities are apologetic only when they are caught and endorsement deals are suddenly in jeopardy. Kinda tough when they could lose the whole pot. But sometimes, these things happen so we can weed out the good grass from the bad grass.

Ateneo Men's Football Match #5 The Curtain Falls

The Curtain Falls
Ateneo 0 vs. FEU 3
by rick olivares

February 2, 2009
Erenchun Field
The first goal was symptomatic of a season gone awry. A volley that was careening wide yet still in the box. Defender Alvin Perez racing to track it down because the dangerous Jovanie Simpron was lurking in the vicinity. Then Ateneo goalkeeper Joel Faustino catching the ball then colliding with Perez. The ball popping free. Simpron snaring the loose ball and blasting it to the right side even if Derrick Candelaria had covered the empty net.

Another goal off a mistake then bang. 1-nil FEU and only in the 9th minute.

There was no reaction from the Ateneo bench. Not a peep but blank and forlorn stares. The air had finally got out.

The season that began with so much promise and anticipation was officially over. From here on in the second round, they play for pride and to salvage a hitherto fearsome rep on the pitch.

If the defending champs had played subpar football (many of them were allegedly forced to play out their final year and defend the championship) thinking they could turn on the jets anytime they wanted they have paid for it. And last season’s two finalists found themselves struggling for a win and out of football purgatory.

The sublime short game of the Tamaraws picked apart the Ateneo team. With the Blue Booters once more unable to get passed midfield, the onus was more on the side of the Ateneo defense which has been spotty for the most part. For the whole first half, the Blue Booters were reduced to a squad that was busy fending off attacks and clearing the ball.

That kind of game after a spell can work either way – a quick counter attack or another mistake by the defense. Given the way the season has played out so far a betting man would have bet the house on the latter.

A wayward cross by FEU was heading out of bounds but freshman defender Paul Cheng tracked it down just as it was skirting outside (that would have given possession to Ateneo). But he put it back in play and weak square pass found its way to Kristian Macaspac who dribbled a little closer, blew by a flat-footed defender then fired a bullet so fast that Faustino didn’t even react to it.

2-nil FEU at the 20th minute.

After the goal, it was as if FEU was the team that was down as they hollered for their side to keep up the pressure. And sure enough, three minutes later, Frank Gustilo’s vicious strike from 40-feet out pierced through the defense hit the side bar and ricocheted in.

3-nil FEU.

At the half, there were no more words of anger or exhortations to dig in. Before the battered, beaten and bruised Ateneo team trooped back to the pitch, the offense and defense held separate huddles to discuss strategy.

And for the first time since the opening match of the season, Ateneo found its groove on the offensive end as they put FEU back on their heels.

Except like their defensive follies, their sorties were just as symptomatic of the season -- they still couldn’t buy a goal.

Gino Tongson and Gerard Cancio had a couple of impressive runs but couldn’t finish.

When the whistle was blown for full time, the curtain had come down early on the Ateneo Men’s Football season.

Three points back. Two points down.

Finally! A win in Anfield. Yet Rafa Benitez still sucks. Liverpool beat 10-man Chelsea thanks to two late strikes (89nth and 90th minute) by Fernando Torres who has struggled all season. Now they're within striking range of Manchester United (two points behind).

Did the red card to Frank Lampard affect Chelsea? Of course it did. Anytime you play with a man down that changes things as Chelsea hoped to come away with at least a draw.

But give credit to Liverpool as they totally dominated the game. It looked like they were headed for a draw until Torres came through.

And what do you know? Benitez used what a fraction of his brainpower when he inserted what could be Liverpool's best starting XI:

Pepe Reina

Jamie Carragher Fabio Aurelio

Martin Skrtel Alvaro Arbeola

Xabi Alonso

Javier Mascherano

Dirk Kuyt Steven Gerrard Alberto Riera

Fernando Torres

Bleachers' Brew #143 You Know You're A Sports Fan When...

You Know You’re A Sports Fan When...
by rick olivares

ESPN the Magazine produces an annual issue that is dedicated to the sports fan that makes for an intriguing, fun, and insightful read. Here is my take on it.

You know you’re a sports fan when:
- on your wedding night your wife tells you to come to bed but you’re busy watching the New York Islanders play. Doesn’t that tell you that you’ve become a statistic that says men would rather watch a sporting event than have sex?

- you accept a job to hand out game programs just to get inside Flushing Meadows to watch the US Open.

- the temperature is below zero and the snow is thick and heavy and you walk two kilometers to buy the day’s issue of the New York Post that contains a coupon that you can redeem for a limited commemorative New York Yankees medallion.

- you know the words to “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” so that during your first trip to a ballpark you sing it with gusto and like a seasoned veteran.

- you conveniently and coincidentally hold meetings outside the office during days when there are UAAP basketball games.

- you save your vacation leaves for sporting events and when you run out of them, you get sick on days when your team is playing.

- as a kid you write a lengthy letter to Robert Jaworski that is encouraging and offers some plays that should help his team get back in the championship series. Then come Christmas Day, you receive not only got a signed Christmas card but also a Ginebra San Miguel jacket.

- you exchange your teddy bear for a football and cradle it to sleep.

- before a football match you get down on your knees to smell the earth and the grass.

- you hold up your sneakers and rub your sweaty palms on the sole because you saw Larry Bird do that.

- you cut out pictures of your favorite athletes in the library copy of Sports Illustrated and do not go back to the scene of the crime for two weeks because you feel guilty.

- it’s a late Sunday afternoon and your favorite football team is playing a match in San Beda in a league that most people have never heard of and the only people present are the girlfriends of the players.

- you’re still up in the stands watching a baseball game that has gone into extra innings and it’s close to midnight.

- you save up a week’s earnings to go to Mexico to watch luchadore wrestling.

- you get annoyed at someone who texts you asking how his alma mater fared in UAAP football competition yet you know he doesn’t give a crap about the beautiful game and so you don’t reply.

- you run out of your office to lead a cheer of “Let’s Go, Yankees” to counter a group of Boston Red Sox fans who made the trip to New York to cheer the negotiations for the services of Alex Rodriguez.

- you’re in your mid-30’s and you’re trying to master ice skating. You sign up to play in a beginner’s ice hockey league and the first time you enter the penalty box you go, “Wow! I’m like the Hanson Brothers.”

- the media pass issued to you is worth gold during the UAAP basketball and PBA season and you zealously guard it with your life.

- you make the pilgrimage to Cooperstown and Springfield by yourself and your mouth suffers from lockjaw because of your constant oohs and ahhs.

- you get up at one in the morning to watch the UEFA Champions League never mind if you’ve got deadlines to meet during the day and you’ll need all the sleep and rest to keep your mind fresh.

- your favorite clothes are football jerseys and sports jackets.

- some of your biggest fantasies are hitting a game winning shot, getting the prettiest girl on God’s green earth for your girlfriend, and riding off into the Hollywood sunset with a movie made about your life.

- your Yahoo Messenger status reflects your mood and the results of your teams’ fortunes.

- the first section you read in the newspaper is the sports section.

- you’re surly and have that don’t-piss-me-off look at work when your favorite team loses.

- as soon as you wake up you check out the latest sports news on espn.com and si.com.

- you plan to name your children after your sports idols and your wife rolls her eyes when you ask her what she thinks of “Michael Jordan” or “Jordan Michael.”

- at the office you crumple pieces of scratch paper and shoot them at the waste basket.

- you liberally quote lines from Jerry Maguire, Remember the Titans, and Coach Carter when giving motivational speeches.

- you include your favorite sports teams in your prayers.

- it’s your fervent desire to see your child play for the school varsity.

- you know what people mean when they say, “Win one for the Gipper!” and you can explain what an offside call is.

- you watch a UAAP basketball game live then rush home to watch the television replay.

- you refuse to wear clothes that are the color of your rival team.

- even after your body gives up on you play NBA Live or FIFA on your Xbox or Playstation.

- you do not ever ever call football “soccer” or you run the risk of being called a dweeb.

- you’re worse than a Monday morning quarterback and know you could coach your team to victory.

- you know sports trivia that you use to impress people from the opposite sex.

- you swear that nothing beats watching sporting events live as opposed to TV.

- you can rattle off shooting percentages, defensive schemes, and all sort of obscure stats but forget more mundane ones like birthdays or times of meetings.

- you come up with lists like these to show people what you know.

Kobe loves Barca

Kobe Bryant on FC Barcelona

ROOTS
Growing up in Italy, I followed soccer religiously. I'd go to the park to play basketball, but there were mini goals under the baskets, so I'd end up playing soccer with the other kids first. I became a Barça fan a few years ago, when Ronaldinho was there. I watched him when I was in Rome in 2005, and he was doing stuff I'd never seen before.

PLUGGED IN
Pau Gasol grew up in Barcelona, so he keeps me in the loop. I follow games on the Internet, and even when we don't have time to watch, we talk about the team. Sasha Vujacic likes Madrid, so that leads to a lot of smack-talk in the locker room.

THE GOODS
I have a great jersey collection; Leo Messi threw his to me in the stands at the Olympics. I also have signed soccer balls from Pelé for my kids and a picture with Diego Maradona.

WORLD VIEW
I just enjoy the game and its influence. If you look at European basketball players who grew up playing soccer, they see our game differently—the angles, the cuts. I enjoy watching that.

Torn asunder in the Land Down Under

Did you watch the Women's Singles Finals between Serena Williams and Dinara Safina? Was that a walk in (Melbourne) Park or what? No contest whatsoever. 6-0, 6-3. The first opening set sweep since Steffi Graf dumped Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in 1994 6-0, 6-2. And Williams did this in under an hour.

She ran Safina all over the baseline then sent powerful volleys that found an open court. It didn't help that the Russian lass shot herself on the foot by committing all those unforced errors.

With Maria Sharapova ailing. Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic inconsistent. Daniela Hantuchova just another pretty face. Elena Dementieva winning tournaments that do not matter, the Williams sisters still have a lot of opportunities to dominate women's tennis.

And Serena Williams won the Australian Open for the fourth time and all in odd years -- 2003, 2005, 2007 & 2009.

In Men's Doubles, brothers Mark and Bob Bryan won their third Doubles title in Australia after winning the last two sets over Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles 2-6 7-5 6-0.

The way they were playing in the first set, I thought it was all over for the Bryans but they were steady in the second set before breaking the Indian-Bahamanian duo for their seventh career Grand Slam Doubles title.
