Salud resigns from PBA’s CEO post

BUSINESS MIRROR learned that Angelico “Chito” T. Salud, current Philippine Basketball Association Chief Executive Officer tendered his resignation today.

Apparently, Salud was unhappy about a confluence of events that led to a special board meeting that was attended by 10 representatives from different PBA teams last October 19 at the PBA offices in Libis, Quezon City.

Salud was reportedly highly concerned about three matters: the reduction of his compensation package without informing him; the transfer of the marketing department that was under him to the office of the new commissioner, Andres Narvasa III; and the appointment of a Deputy Commissioner without creating a position that was approved by the Board of Governors. Salud asked the board if there were trust issues involved to which the board denied there wasn’t any. By meeting’s end, the board upheld the current structure where the CEO reports to the board and runs the business as well as his current package. However, the structure of running the league needed to be discussed between Salud and Narvasa before any board resolution or amendments to the PBA’s constitution were made.

The special meeting was called after Salud learned from a management committee member that his compensation package was being reduced. However, according to the board, while there was a discussion about that and it was informal, the board never confirmed it.

Of late, there have been rumours of discord between within the PBA with camps being formed with Salud on one side and Narvasa on the other.

The meeting ended on a cordial note, however, after a recent vacation abroad, Salud was said to have made up his mind that it was time to move on. In a letter dated 30 November and sent to current PBA Chairman Robert S. Non, Salud thanked the board for the past five and a half seasons and that “I feel that my work is done.”

Expounded Salud in the letter, “The organizational structure of having a President/CEO and a Commissioner has already been initiated and will be institutionalized by the board in due time. The transitioning of the new commissioner is finished.”

Salud stated he intends to step down from his post effective the end of December 2015.

BUSINESS MIRROR attempted to get in touch with Salud who has yet to reply as of press time.
