There is a reason why the game is played at 40
minutes.
Southridge-C stuck close to Espiritu Santo Parochial
School in the early goings of their Division IV match in the Metro Manila
Basketball League. At first, it seemed like center Mateo Gonzales was waging a
one-boy war against ESPS as he was the only one doing the scoring. But
Southridge’s defense was horrible allowing ESPS to drive to the basket almost
at will.
Their problem was they couldn’t finish their
fastbreaks or layups particularly Roland Atengco who muffed three layups in the
first period.
Gradually, ESPS pulled away to the point where they
were up by 20-points early in the third period. That’s when Southridge’s Jag
Dagelet came alive as he literally carried his team on his back.
The point guard harassed his ESPS counterpart into
turnovers. With Dagelet playing suffocating D and scoring on drives, Gonzales
finally had some help. Alvin Yco and then later Kyle Trinidad came in and also
provided some badly needed points. Suddenly, the deficit was whittled down to
eight points.
Unfortunately, Dagelet, who looked tired from leading
the rally, was subbed out. A crucial turnover by his replacement saw the
reeling ESPS get a reprieve and their second wind. Yco and Trinidad (two
consecutive jumpers at that point) tried their best to keep Southridge in the
game but ESPS had regained the momentum.
Dagelet returned to the game and immediately stole
the ball. But he was unable to finish.
ESPS finished off the valiant Southridge-C 68-59 for
a win.
